Origins of the Inter-Varsity Clubs

How it all started ...

The idea of IVC was conceived in May 1946 by two undergraduates at St.John's College, Cambridge. At that time, the International Students' Service organised informal dances during term times but not during the long vacations. Then the idea came - why, the two asked, should they not run such dances themselves?

Thus was born the idea for the Inter-Varsity Vacation Club.

The first programme ...

The first programme under the auspices of the Inter-Varsity Vacation Club proper consisted of three dances which took place in the Easter Vacation of 1947 in Chelsea Town Hall. The first was on Friday 28th March, the night before the Boat Race, and was a sensational success. There were about six hundred people there and the I.V.C. movement was well and truly launched!

IVC today....

Now known more simply as the Inter-Varsity Club or 'IVC', there are 45 IVCs around the U.K. Within them, IVC members enjoy a huge variety of social and sporting events and activities. Why not join your local IVC right now?
