WIN CAFE SCI: WIRELESS COMMS AND A CONNECTED WORLD
Meetup Mon 7 Jan 2019
Time:   19:45
Meeting:   In the front of the library ... hosted by William Vine of Winchester Cafe Scientifique
“Wireless Communications: Towards a Connected World of People and Things.” Wireless communication has evolved from pigeon-post to paging, voice calls, text messages, video calls – and now Internet everywhere. It has become the ubiquitous means of socializing, doing business and of entertainment. There are around 5 billion mobile phones in use through which we transmit around 60 terabytes of data every month. And yet, this is just the beginning – the future is even more exciting as we are moving from the internet-of-things to holographic video calls, which can conjure up the image of a person right in the room when we talk to them. However, one of the key issues of this technology, whether we have the capacity to accommodate all these users at a high quality-of-service. An obvious solution to circumvent this problem is to increase the bandwidth used. But we only have a limited bandwidth.

In this talk, I shall shed light on how to address this problem.

“The Origin of the First Supermassive Black Holes in the Universe” Dr Dan Whalen.”

Most massive galaxies in the universe today harbor supermassive black holes (SMBHs), with masses from a few million to tens of billions of solar masses.  But very bright quasars powered by billion solar mass BHs have now been discovered at redshift z ~ 7, or just 775 million years after the Big Bang.  They pose serious challenges to current theories of cosmological structure formation because it is not known how BHs this massive appeared by such early epochs.  I will discuss the possible origins of the first quasars and present new supercomputer simulations of how they could form in the first billion years of the universe.

CENTRAL STUDIO - LIVE MUSIC "THUNDERSTRUCK"
Meetup Fri 15 Feb 2019
Time:   20:30
Meeting:   Look for the Basingstoke Friends stuffed toy tiger
Finish the week off at a Central Studio tribute band night ... This is great way to finish off a week before the weekend gets into gear.

Thunderstruck are an AC/DC tribute act based in the South of England, that faithfully recreate the magic and hyper-active raw power that is totally AC/DC.

They present an all action stage show, reproducing all the classic songs you would expect to hear at an AC/DC concert, blasting out the adrenaline-driven AC/DC classics using the same equipment as the rock-masters use themselves. The gravel-laden power and charisma of ‘Bon Scott’ and ‘Brian Johnson’ combined, the blistering lead guitar solos and non-stop stage antics of ‘Angus Young’ along with the punch and power of the driving rhythm section of ‘Malcolm Young’, ‘Phil Rudd’ and ‘Cliff Williams’ are all reproduced down to the smallest detail.

Thunderstruck have performed to a great reception everywhere they play, they will transport you on the ‘Rock and Roll Train’ and give you the same ultimate rock n roll experience as AC/DC.

Thunderstruck have been blowing their audiences away for a number of years (literally in some cases where the stage cannons are concerned!!). The band members are all highly experienced and have a massive combined track record of playing at all levels across the UK and the rest of the world.

You will find Basingstoke Makerspace in their new premises at Maritime House. This is the old Royal Naval Association club building which they have recently taken over. Look for the flat roofed building on New Road behind the Top of Town area just past the Council Offices.

What they will be doing ...
Weekly open evening is when you can come along and chat about your projects and what you would like to achieve.

What to bring ...
Bring your ideas and projects to work on.

Important to know ...
If you park here you need to display a permit. Park if there is space and ask for a permit to display. If you are a paying member you can keep the permit.

SOCIAL AT MAIDENHEAD INN, WINCHESTER STREET
Afterwards we join up with the Basingstoke Makerspace members in the Maidenhead Wetherspoons pub from around 9.00pm for a drink and a chat. We are normally somewhere near the front of the pub ... look for the Basingstoke Friends table sign.

Kevin Roche is your host for the evening. He will be able to answer any questions you have on how to become a member of the Makerspace.
